We are open for emergency receiving from 8am until 12am, but we have technicians and doctors on-site to provide intensive care services 24 hours a day.

When your dog or cat has a medical emergency, you can count on MarQueen’s Emergency Service for skilled and compassionate care. No appointment is required, but it’s helpful if you can call us at 916-757-6600 to let us know you’re on the way and if you’ll need help getting your pet from the car to the hospital.

Whatever brings your pet to our ER, we have the expertise to handle it. As one of Greater Sacramento, California’s top emergency veterinary hospitals, we’re staffed around the clock by a team of highly trained veterinarians, including board-certified specialists in emergency and critical care. Plus, we’re equipped with today’s most advanced diagnostic equipment and treatment technologies.

We know it’s tough to have a pet in the hospital. Rest assured, we’ll make your pet’s stay as comfortable as possible and keep you informed every step of the way.

What to expect in the ER

Upon arrival, a veterinary technician will evaluate your pet right away through a process called triage. Patients in unstable condition will be seen by a veterinarian first and treated immediately.

If your pet is stable, a member of our patient-care staff will meet with you to obtain information about your pet’s condition, then the emergency veterinarian will meet with you. After examining your pet, you will be presented with recommended diagnostic testing and/or treatment options along with their associated costs. Together, we will decide on a course of action.

While your dog or cat is being treated, you’ll be regularly updated on their status.

After your pet receives appropriate care, the emergency veterinarian will recommend one of the following:

Your pet may return home and you will be given discharge instructions on how to provide any necessary continuing care
Your pet should remain in our hospital for 24-hour monitoring and intensive care
Your primary care veterinarian will resume your pet’s care, providing any necessary follow-up or additional treatment

A summary of your pet’s medical record will be shared with your primary care veterinarian, ensuring continuity of care.

MarQueen provides comprehensive services to diagnose and treat critically ill or injured dogs and cats, including:

Advanced life support/cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Blood/plasma transfusions
Emergency surgery
Onsite diagnostic imaging (X-ray, ultrasound, CT scan, fluoroscopy)
STAT laboratory
State-of-the-art intensive care unit (ICU) with advanced monitoring and oxygen therapy (breathing support)

If you think your pet has been poisoned

If your pet has ingested something that could be poisonous, a call to one of these two helplines, staffed 24/7 by veterinary toxicologists, can help determine if a visit to our ER is in order. If your dog or cat should be seen, the toxicologist will send us a report to help expedite a treatment plan. Note that fees may apply to these calls.
