Dr. Peter Walsh is a 1994 graduate of Colorado State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. He also has a Masters in Veterinary Science. Dr. Walsh joined the faculty at the University of California Davis where he rotated coverage for all three of the small animal surgical services, and was ultimately instrumental in developing and running the small animal surgical oncology service. Dr. Walsh is board certified with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, and has a particular interest in surgical oncology and reconstructive surgery. He is considered one of the leading authorities on limb spare procedures in dogs with bone tumors.

In the novel by Pam Houston, the character of Dr. Evans is based on the real Dr. Peter Walsh. The story may be fiction, but when Dr. Evans crawls into a crate to spend the night with a patient, it is truth. Simply one of the best out there, as a doctor, surgeon, and human being.
